We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." - Barack Obama Insights is back! If you're a new subscriber, welcome! If you're an 'old/loyal' subscriber, welcome back! Let me start this first newsletter of the new year by wishing you a wonderful 2011 that brings you everything you hope and dream for. One little ingredient Yes, it is really possible that the year could turn out that way for you but - short of one-in-a-million shots at winning the lottery and the like - there is one little ingredient that you will need to bring to the party... Responsibility :-) Hmm, I know, no big surprises there, but you would be amazed if you knew just how many people take the view that: "It's either going to be my year or it isn't." Waiting for the hand of fate These are typically people who are stuck in some sort of rut, locked into a way of life that they feel can only be changed thanks to some stroke of luck or the intervention of a helping hand of fate. What these people don't fully appreciate is that the power to make substantive, lasting and positive change is well and truly in their own hands. All they need to do is take responsibility for their own future and then follow up with some action. Taking responsibility may seem a rather obvious prerequisite for success - but believe it or not, a great many people find it inordinately hard to do. It's not outside it's within Perhaps it's the consumerist society or the culture of entitlement that seems to pervade our present day society? Whatever it is, I think it has much to do with the way we have been taught to look externally for the solutions to our problems and sources of happiness, rather than to look within. In life coaching we say that everybody has a choice when it comes to assessing their own success in realizing their dreams: Your choice
Let's face it - justifying and blaming is a heck of a lot easier because you can shift the responsibility to someone or something else and then feel a whole lot better about yourself! You know what I mean... "I'm too old to think about starting my own business." "If I hadn't been born with my mother's cautious nature I might have gone places." But the feeling of relief you get from this approach is only temporary because nothing much changes in your life. Personal liberation However, the moment you stop looking at others and start looking within for the source of your success, you will start to enjoy the feeling of personal liberation. You see, when you come to terms with it, there is nothing quite as liberating as knowing that it is you - and you alone - who has the true power to change your life for the better. We like to say... "If it's to be, it's up to me!" My wish for you So that's what I wish for you in 2011... The courage to take responsibility for your life; Warm regards, Bill.
