"Abundance is, in large part, an attitude." - Sue Patton Thoele “I’d love to do your programme but I just can’t afford it.” I can’t tell you how many times a week I receive emails like this from people who say they would really love to train to become life coaches but just don’t have the resources to get started. Money thoughts Most of us experience times in our lives when money is tight. But for some people money is perpetually tight. They just never seem to have enough despite thinking about money just about every waking hour of the day. And yet there’s plenty of money out there. I read a book recently in which the author claimed that there is enough money sloshing around to allow every single person in the world to have at least £1m (about R12m)! A question of access So the issue is nothing to do with scarcity of money, it is to do with access to it. And getting access to it depends to a great extent on one’s mentality. Yes, I know that one’s family background, IQ and education can all have a role to play but access to money and wealth is by no means completely dependent on these factors. If it were, how would we explain the huge number of ‘rags to riches’ stories that abound? It’s inside your head that counts By far the best predictor of financial success is mindset or attitude to money, in other words what’s going on inside your head! Stop for a moment and consider the language you use inside your head when you think about money. If only… Do most of your sentences start with “If…” or “If only…”? Is your language peppered with negative words like “can’t”, “not”, “don’t”, “shouldn’t”? If so, it’s likely you have an entrenched scarcity mentality characterized by numerous limiting beliefs. The scarcity mentality is self-perpetuating and self-fulfilling. It’s human nature to try to justify (rather than take responsibility) for our inability to achieve our goals. Thus the common statements you hear like “It takes money to make money”, “Money is the root of all evil” and “I wasn’t endowed with enough intelligence to be wealthy.” Say these things to yourself and others often enough and they will become beliefs that you will find difficult to shift. These beliefs will, in turn, dictate that you live a life characterized by scarcity of money. Tapping into the natural flow There is another approach. It’s called the abundance mentality and it’s characterized by numerous empowering beliefs about money. People with an abundance mentality have an affinity towards money, being able to tap into its natural flow. The language they use in their heads is light, positive, self-promoting and can-do in nature such as “I am worthy”, “Money flows to me easily”, "Having money is fun” and “My cup is always full”. The abundance mentality is self-fulfilling, harnessing the powerful Law of Attraction to draw money and wealth closer. Making the transition So how do you change from enduring a scarcity mentality to enjoying an abundance mentality? Clearly this won’t happen overnight because you need to rid yourself of numerous deeply entrenched beliefs and turn your back on habits that you have spent some time cultivating. But it can happen surprisingly quickly and easily if you are sufficiently committed. One of the most effective ways to bring about a new attitude towards money is to work with a life coach who is trained to help you deal with, eradicate and replace those beliefs that hold you back. Keep asking yourself where your limiting beliefs about money come from. Keep questioning them and shaking them. Look to your life to find proof for why they are nothing but a pack of lies. Think about the beliefs that you want to hold. Why are they true for you? Now, install them in your life using positive affirmations that you can repeat to yourself over and over. Good luck! As always... With my warmest regards, Bill.
