Being coached and becoming a coach by: Bill Burridge
Thanks for the question which is a good one. There is no one answer and my advice would depend on your rationale.
Experiencing what it is like to be a 'client' by being coached would certainly offer a valuable extra dimension to anyone considering training to become a life coach, however it is not a prerequisite.
Many of our trainees have benefited from being coached before they start training and many more have done both in parallel by signing up for the PRO certification track. Others have chosen to become certified first before hiring their own coach to help them develop and hone their skills.
There are good arguments for all three routes and this is a personal decision.
If you are considering being coached first because you feel you 'need to get your own life in order' before starting training then I feel this is a misguided motivation. The training programme itself involves substantial personal development. You would find it almost impossible to become a New Insights certified life coach without experiencing your own personal transformation in the process.
If, however, you are considering being coached first in order to see if that is what you would like to do, or to test the power of the coaching system and process, then I think this is a good motivation.
My personal recommendation, if you are already pretty sure that you want to be a life coach, is to use coaching to help you refine your ability to coach.
So, if you have the means, choose the PRO option and combine coaching and training ... or, if you have a strict budget, do the CLASSIC option and then, once you are certified, think of hiring yourself your own coach!
